Mining Equipment Machining Applications & Cases

Heavy-duty machining solutions for mining drive shafts, crusher wear parts, bearing housings and conveyor components.

01 Mining Machinery Drive Shafts & Heavy-Duty Shafts

01 WORKPIECE INFORMATION

Mining machinery drive shafts, crusher main shafts, conveyor drive shafts, and other heavy-duty shafts are used in crushers, ball mills, conveyors, and mine hoisting equipment. Commonly manufactured from alloy or high-strength steel, these components often feature large diameters, long lengths, and high load-bearing requirements, with machining features such as external diameters, shoulders, grooves, threads, and keyways.

02 Machining Challenges

Large and heavy shafts generate significant cutting forces and require high machine rigidity, stable workholding, and suitable support during machining. Long, large-diameter workpieces can also be prone to deflection and vibration, affecting diameter accuracy, concentricity, and surface finish. Accurate relationships between different shaft sections, shoulders, and keyways must also be maintained.

03 Machining Solution

Appropriate workholding and support should be selected according to the shaft diameter, length and weight. Rough, semi-finish and finish turning can be performed in separate stages to control cutting loads and machining deformation. Large-diameter steel bars can first be cut to length using a GOLDCNC GZ4260 Metal Band Saw Machine, followed by a GOLDCNC CW6180 Heavy-Duty Lathe Machine for external diameters, end faces, shoulders, grooves and threads. A CNC machining center can be added for complex keyways or milling features.

01 WORKPIECE INFORMATION

Crusher jaw plates, impact plates, liners and other wear-resistant components are critical working parts of mining crushing equipment and are continuously exposed to impact, compression and abrasion from ore. Depending on the equipment and operating conditions, they can be manufactured from high-manganese steel, wear-resistant alloy steel and other heavy-duty materials. Typical machining operations include profile machining, mounting holes, locating holes and surface milling, making them typical applications of CNC machining of mining wear parts.

02 Machining Challenges

Wear plates and crusher jaw plates are often large and manufactured from hard, wear-resistant materials, resulting in high cutting loads and demanding requirements for machine rigidity and tooling performance. Some components also have irregular profiles and thick sections, requiring accurate mounting-hole positions and flat machined surfaces while maintaining stable workholding to minimize vibration.

03 Machining Solution

Stable positioning with high-rigidity fixtures should be used according to the component dimensions and geometry, while cutting parameters and tool loads should be carefully controlled. Mounting holes, locating holes and machined surfaces can be processed on a vertical machining center to reduce positioning errors caused by repeated setups. The GOLDCNC VMC1270 Vertical Machining Center is recommended for different sizes of mining wear parts, supporting milling, drilling and precision machining of large wear plates and crusher components.

Crusher jaw plates, impact plates, liners, and other wear-resistant components are critical parts of mining crushing equipment, continuously exposed to impact, compression, and abrasion. Commonly manufactured from high-manganese steel, wear-resistant alloy steel, and other heavy-duty materials, they typically require profile machining, mounting holes, locating holes, and machined surfaces.

02 Machining Challenges

Large wear parts and hard materials generate high cutting loads, requiring strong machine rigidity and stable tooling performance. Irregular profiles and thick sections can also make workholding more demanding, while mounting holes and machined surfaces require accurate positioning and stable machining to minimize vibration and maintain consistency.

03 Machining Solution

A stable machining datum should be established according to the housing structure, with high-rigidity fixtures used to minimize workpiece movement and vibration. Critical features such as datum surfaces, bearing bores, mounting holes and threaded holes can be machined as much as possible on a CNC machining center to reduce repeated setups and positioning errors. The GOLDCNC VMC1580 Vertical Machining Center is recommended for different mining equipment housing sizes, providing sufficient machining capacity and rigidity for large castings.

01 WORKPIECE INFORMATION

Mining conveyor pulleys, drive drums, bend pulleys, and their shaft components are widely used for transporting ore, coal, and other bulk materials. Drive drum shafts operate under high torque and heavy loads and are commonly manufactured from high-strength steel or welded structures, with features such as external diameters, shoulders, bearing seats, keyways, and threads.

02 Machining Challenges

Drive drum shafts are often long and heavy, generating significant cutting forces during machining. Bearing seats and drive connection areas require accurate dimensions and high concentricity, while long shafts can be prone to deflection and vibration. Proper workholding and support are therefore essential for maintaining dimensional accuracy and surface quality.

03 Machining Solution

Appropriate workholding and auxiliary support should be configured according to the shaft length and diameter. Rough, semi-finish and finish turning can then be used to gradually complete the main diameters and bearing seats. Raw steel can be cut to length using a GOLDCNC GB4280 Metal Band Saw Machine, followed by a GOLDCNC CAK6180 CNC Lathe Machine for external diameters, shoulders, bearing seats and threads. Non-rotational features such as keyways can be completed on a CNC machining center, creating an integrated machining process for mining conveyor components.
