01 WORKPIECE INFORMATION

Flanges are critical connection components used in oil and gas pipelines, pressure vessels, valves and energy equipment. They are commonly manufactured from carbon steel, stainless steel and alloy steel. Typical flange machining includes internal bores, external diameters, end faces, bolt holes and sealing surfaces, making them a typical application of oil and gas flange machining.

02 Machining Challenges

Large flanges can have considerable diameters and weight, requiring accurate control of end-face flatness, bore dimensions and bolt-hole positioning. For high-pressure pipeline and pressure equipment applications, sealing surface quality is particularly important. Stable workholding and efficient machining of large workpieces are also key considerations.

03 Machining Solution

Flange blanks can first be cut to size using a GOLDCNC GB4260 Metal Band Saw Machine, followed by a CAK6150 CNC Lathe Machine for external diameters, bores, end faces and sealing surfaces. Flanges with multiple bolt holes can then be processed on a VMC1370 CNC Machining Center for drilling and tapping. A proper datum and process sequence helps reduce positioning errors caused by repeated setups. Valve bodies are critical pressure-containing components used in oil and gas transportation, processing, and control systems. They are commonly manufactured from carbon steel, stainless steel, or alloy steel and feature internal passages, valve-seat bores, flange faces, threaded holes, and mounting holes.

02 Machining Challenges

Valve body machining involves multiple surfaces, internal passages, and precision holes that must maintain accurate positional relationships. Critical bores and sealing surfaces require tight dimensional control, while high-strength materials demand sufficient machine rigidity and stable cutting performance to maintain machining quality.

03 Machining Solution

A stable machining datum should first be established according to the valve body geometry, followed by machining of major end faces, flange surfaces, internal holes and threaded holes. For complex valve bodies, a GOLDCNC VMC1370 CNC Machining Center can consolidate milling, drilling, tapping and selected boring operations, reducing repeated setups. CNC turning can be added for rotational bores and cylindrical surfaces. Therefore, the CNC machining center should be the primary solution, complemented by a CAK6163 CNC Lathe Machine where required.

The oil and gas industry uses large quantities of steel pipes, heavy-wall tubes and pipe fittings, including elbows, tees, connectors and pipe sections. These components are commonly manufactured from carbon steel, stainless steel and alloy steel. Before turning, milling and hole machining, they require efficient and consistent length cutting, making them typical applications of oil and gas pipe machining.

02 Machining Challenges

Oil and gas pipes are often long, thick-walled and manufactured from high-strength materials. Batch production requires consistent cutting lengths while minimizing burrs and material waste. Thick-wall steel pipes also require stable band sawing performance during extended cutting operations.

03 Machining Solution

Steel pipes and heavy-wall tubes can be accurately cut to length using a GOLDCNC GB4280 Metal Band Saw Machine, with appropriate clamping and sawing parameters for stable cutting. Semi-automatic or automatic band saw machines can improve productivity in batch production. The cut blanks can then be transferred to a CNC lathe or machining center for end-face, threading, hole and connection-surface machining. Pump shafts, compressor shafts, drive shafts and other energy equipment shafts are widely used in oil and gas, power generation and industrial energy systems. Depending on the operating environment, they can be manufactured from alloy steel, stainless steel and other engineering materials. Typical machining features include external diameters, end faces, shoulders, grooves, threads and keyways, making them typical applications of CNC shaft machining for energy equipment.

02 Machining Challenges

Energy equipment shafts are often long and, in some cases, large in diameter and heavy. Deflection, vibration and cutting forces can affect machining stability. High concentricity and dimensional accuracy are required between different diameters, shoulders and grooves, particularly for shafts used in continuously operating energy equipment.

03 Machining Solution

Appropriate workholding and support should be selected according to shaft length and diameter. Rough, semi-finish and finish turning can be performed in separate stages to reduce deformation and vibration. Grooves, threads and keyways can be machined through a combination of turning and milling processes according to the component design.
